Port and Harbor Projects- Berths 55/56, Port of Oakland
N55/56 Container Wharf And Middle Harbor Fill, Port of Oakland
When the Fleet Industrial Supply Center, Oakland (FISCO) closed as part of the military Base Realignment and Closure program, the Port of Oakland seized the opportunity to use the land to expand and modernize the Port's shipping capacity. The Berths 55/56 project includes widening the existing Inner Harbor Channel by excavating existing shoreline and constructing 2,400 linear feet of new container wharf.
The Middle Harbor Fill consists of constructing a new 50-foot high rock fill containment dike across the FISCO finger piers and filling behind the new containment dike to create 16 acres of new container yard space. A separate underwater dike will be constructed to contain a new 18-acre wetlands and habitat restoration area.
Fugro, serving as a key subconsultant to CH2M HILL, has expertly addressed the project's major geotechnical issues, which included 2.6 million cubic yards of dredging, seismic stabilization of the new shoreline, wharf foundation support, and containment dike stability. Fugro was the geotechnical engineer of record for the entire project, performing investigation, analysis, innovative design, cost estimates, and geotechnical support during construction.
