Marine Survey Projects- Chevron Pipeline
Chevron BAPL Honker Bay Pipeline Crossing Remediation Project, Pre-Remediation Survey.
As a result of surveys conducted by Fugro West, Inc. in Jan 2005, two locations along the 8” underground pipeline running through Honker Bay were found to be exposed. The southern site (E-2) located on the northern edge of the shipping channel, the pipeline was not only exposed but also found to be unsupported. At the Northern site (E-1) the pipeline was only found to be exposed. Due to these results, Chevron proceeded with a remediation program which would consist of placing mats along side each area and backfill on top of the pipeline with rock.
Fugro provided hydrographic survey services to Chevron for a Pre-remediation survey to determine bottom conditions within the proposed barge anchor pattern, prior to commencement of the remediation project. A side scan sonar system was used to map surficial features within the survey area. The foremost challenge encountered with the survey was depth of the water. Specifically, the shallow water depths within the survey areas (less than 5’ MLLW) required the survey to be conducted at high tide or on a flood tide. Another major challenge was the wind and current depending on their direction. If they were heading in opposite directions it would create wind chop on the water making it unsafe to operate and provide poor quality data. The survey was completed in one day with two days for travel, boat launch and systems tests. Data processing was conducted in the Ventura office at the completion of the job. A surficial features map and mosaic was constructed using previous drawings as a base and updated with the results from this survey. Maps were delivered to the client within 3 business days after completion of data acquisition.
