California State University, Channel Islands, East Campus Development and Science Building
Fugro conducted geotechnical studies for the proposed East Campus Development and a new science building at California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI). The East Campus Development site is adjacent to the former Camarillo State Hospital facility, which has recently been transformed into the CSUCI campus. The East Campus development will include:
- Backbone Infrastructure
- 900 Residential Units
- Future K through 8 Elementary School
The geotechnical site exploration for the East Campus Development and the Campus Science Building included cone penetrometer test (CPT), hollow-stem-auger drill holes, and backhoe trench excavations. Based on the results of the exploration program, Fugro provided information with respect to soil and groundwater conditions, the geologic setting and geologic hazards. The study included:
- Engineering properties of encountered soils, including consolidation potential of soils
- Excavation and trenching conditions
- Suitability of onsite soils for use as compacted fill
- Estimated shrinkage and subsidence from earthwork activities
- Subgrade preparation and compaction requirements for road construction and mass-grading, including fill and backfill placement
- Construction considerations including groundwater, excavation, site preparation and grading, stripping, subgrade stabilization, structural fill, suitability of onsite materials, and pavement subgrade preparation
- Mitigation options for expansive soils and criteria for temporary excavations
- Foundation types with estimated building area and overexcavation requirements for proposed structures
- Asphaltic-concrete pavement section design
- Grading observation, compaction and construction materials testing during the 1 million yard earthwork operation.
