Industrial Development Projects- LAXT Coal Handling Facility

LAXT Coal Handling Facility, Port of Los Angeles, California
The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) and their tenant, the Los Angeles Export Terminal, Inc. (LAXT), constructed a remote dry bulk storage facility and a materials handling and transfer system at and near Pier 300 on Terminal Island in the POLA. The facilities store bulk coal, transported to the site by unit train, and petroleum coke, transported to the site by truck, in an approximately 105-acre remote storage facility on Terminal Island. The facilities include enhanced pavement sections for heavy vehicle traffic. Fugro performed design-level geotechnical studies that included the following:

  • Review of existing geotechnical reports and review of historical site aerial photographs;
  • Field exploration including 16 drill holes and 50 CPTs;
  • Soils laboratory testing;
  • Recommendation of foundation types;
  • Evaluation of seismic loading;
  • Determination of load-carrying capacities and potential settlements; and
  • Evaluation of ground water control requirements for below ground construction.

Data handling and analyses were performed using Fugro's Geographic Information System (GIS).
