Port and Harbor Projects- Morris Reservoir

Morris Reservoir Sediment Investigation
Fugro conducted an extensive investigation of the sediments and their physical and chemical properties in Morris Reservoir in the San Gabriel Mountains. Our study included:

  • 25 borings to 80-foot depth in water depths of 20 to 160 feet,
  • 20 vibrocores,
  • surface sampling, and
  • a geophysical survey.

Due to the remote location, difficult access, water depths, and required sampling depths, a detailed evaluation of the exploration options was made to determine the most cost-effective and least risk combination of marine platform and drill rig. Execution of the drilling and sampling program required mobilization of a modular barge and skid-mounted marine drilling equipment.

Integration of the geophysical survey data and sample results allowed the sediment chemistry to be evaluated as a function of geologic conditions as well as sediment depth and location. The additional costs of including geotechnical and geologic evaluations to an environmental sampling program resulted in an additional cost of less than 15 percent and provided our clients better understanding of conditions that allowed them the opportunity to negotiate permitting of sluicing or dredging options with added confidence.
