CMT Projects- Norfolk Bridge

Norfolk Bridge Replacement, San Mateo, California
For the Norfolk Bridge in San Mateo, California, Fugro provided:

  • earthwork services,
  • special inspection observation and testing services, and
  • environmental consultation services

The project consists of replacing a bridge on Norfolk Street that crossed over San Mateo Creek. The former bridge was removed and will be entirely replaced with a box culvert style bridge.

The previous bridge, constructed in 1949, spanned across San Mateo Creek and was located at about 650 feet east of Route 101. The bridge was a single span concrete T-beam structure, approximately 79" in width and 32.4" in length, and supported on spread footing foundations embedded at about 13 feet below the existing Norfolk Street which is at Elevation 105 feet (City Datum).

One of the primary purposes of the bridge replacement was to provide a 60 percent increase in the creek flow volume for the 100-year flood event. The bridge modifications consist of widening the existing bridge on two sides and raising the deck by about 1 to 1.5 feet to meet the hydraulic requirements. New spread footing foundations matching the existing footings and new bridge abutment walls are planned.

Fugro provided environmental consultation services, which included:

  • On-call sampling,
  • Laboratory chemical analysis, and
  • Consultation services of the excavated soils that are to be exported for disposal at the local landfill.

Our scope of services during the construction portion of the project included:

  • Sampling and testing of structural concrete for the bridge, bridge footing, and approach slab;
  • Review of the concrete compression test results performed on the concrete cylinder samples;
  • Observations and field density tests for underground utility trench backfill, wall backfill, and subgrade preparation;
  • Observations and field density tests for baserock and asphalt concrete placement operations;
  • Special inspection for shop and field welding;
  • Observation of epoxy dowel and threaded rod installation.
