Port of Los Angeles

Background
In the early 1980s, the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) began a series of long-range planning activities to forecast the Port's growth and to plan for a growing Pacific Rim trade. At that time, a plan was formulated to identify harbor improvements needed to accommodate anticipated future cargo demands through the year 2020.

The resulting 2020 Plan indicated that POLA would have to develop substantial new berths, backlands, and infrastructure to accommodate anticipated increases in trade, larger classes of vessels, and changes in the types and volumes of commodities being shipped through the Port. The expanded harbor facilities and infrastructure improvements completed now allow POLA to maintain its position as one of the world's largest and most complete port complexes.

The construction of the new Pier 300/Pier 400 complex has been acclaimed as the largest seaport expansion ever conducted in the United States.
