Port of Los Angeles (POLA) Geotechnical Design Studies

Pier 400 Design
During the design phase, Fugro addressed various geotechnical issues associated with the Pier 400 construction including:

  • Evaluation of geologic hazards,
  • Estimation of potential groundshaking and fault ruptures,
  • Characterization of in situ materials to be dredged as to desirability for use as fill,
  • Consideration of dredging and material placement scenarios,
  • Calculation of overall dredge and fill volumes for each stage of development,
  • Evaluation of native foundation and fill materials performance,
  • Estimation of liquefaction potential
  • Analysis of settlement of native foundation and fill materials;
  • Analysis of short/long-term stability of 81-foot-deep navigation channel dredge cut slopes;
  • Performance of stability analyses to identify problems and developed dredge cut slope inclinations
  • Estimation of load capacity of berthing facility foundation elements.
  • Evaluation of existing breakwaters and dike alignments;
  • Evaluation of static stability and seismic deformation characteristics of retainment structures,
  • Evaluation of retainment structure designs related to staggered rock dike concepts.
  • Study of cut slope-dike combinations that exceeded 100' in height.
  • Analysis of retainment structure options for feasibility, structure stability, cut slope-structure stability; and seismic performance.

The Pier 400 Design Consultants, a joint venture between Frederic R. Harris and Moffatt & Nichol Engineers, conducted the conceptual design of Pier 400 in 1993. The primary geotechnical consultant to the Pier 400 Design Consultants was Fugro.
