San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (SFOBB)- GIS Database Development

GIS Database Development (GIS)
Fugro's GIS was used throughout the investigation and design studies to manage and integrate the vast amount of geotechnical data generated by the project. The GIS was used to:

  • Gather existing data into a consistent format in a consistent coordinate system. Existing data consisted of Caltrans borings, regional geologic maps, historical aerial photographs, bathymetric surveys, and utility surveys.

  • Plan the locations of the new explorations in relation to various possible bridge alignments, in relation to the location of existing data, and in relation to subsurface features identified from existing data.

  • Model and map various subsurface geologic units by integrating the boring, cone penetrometer, 2-D geophysical, and 3-D geophysical data. Of particular importance was the extent of a buried paleochannel filled with soft bay mud and the depth and competence of the Franciscan bedrock.

  • Develop customized, automated boring logs, cross sections, and soil parameter plots to help characterize soil properties of various geologic units and help understand the distribution of the various units in the project area.

  • Develop customized Log of Test Borings (LOTBs) for Caltrans to display the large amount of field, laboratory, and downhole data that could not be shown on their standard logs.

  • Calculate the potential liquefaction of fill materials at the Oakland Shore approach.

  • Communicate the findings of our study to the client using 3-dimenional visualization and interactive GIS demonstrations.
