Environmental- Stulsaft Park

Stulsaft Park (Former Mercury Mine), Redwood City, California
For several years, the City of Redwood City and members of the Stulsaft Parks Renovation Committee had planned improvements to Stulsaft Park. They were surprised to learn, late in the process, that mercury-bearing ore was mined in the late 1950s from a site very near the park, and that chromium, mercury, and nickel concentrations might be of concern.

The City asked Fugro to perform an environmental investigation prior to renovating the park to ensure that park users were safe from metals exposure. To avoid losing funds raised by the Renovation Committee, Fugro expedited investigation of the playground area. Fugro's comprehensive approach for this project ranged from historical research to mercury speciation studies.

Public involvement was one of the most crucial aspects of this high-visibility project. Fugro's close and thorough communication with the Renovation Committee, City, and other stakeholders ensured that all were informed about the findings and their implications. The city ultimately received county approval for the proposed renovations.
