Geographic InformationSystems (GIS) Services
Overview
Fugro has been using GIS for about 12 years for the organization, analysis, and display of geologic, geotechnical, water resources, and marine survey data. We are experts at ESRI's Arc/Info and ArcView, both in the use and customization of the programs. GIS is an integral part of our business and we understand its application to surface and subsurface data analysis.
How Fugro Uses GIS
Fugro uses GIS for typical uses such as organizing data, querying data, and creating maps. However, Fugro also uses the power of GIS to automate routine tasks and do complex calculations. Automated routine tasks and complex analyses using GIS include:
- Boring Logs
- Cross Sections
- Parameter Plots
- CPT correlations
- Liquefaction evaluation
- Volume calculations
- Settlement estimates
Fugro's application of GIS to geotechnical, water resources, environmental and marine survey projects is unique. Using sophisticated, customized programs, we have extended the capability of the GIS to include a variety of modules that are proprietary to Fugro.
Benefits of GIS to the Client
The research and development conducted by Fugro greatly benefits the client. We now have powerful tools for managing and analyzing surface and subsurface data that are not available with standard GIS packages. Benefits to the client include:
- Managing large volumes of data in various formats including soils data, well data, geophysical data, bathymetric and topographic data from paper sources, AutoCAD, Microstation, ASCII files, etc.
- Outputting the data in various formats that are easy for clients, subconsultants, engineers, and geologists to understand- maps, logs, cross sections, and 3-D views.
- Automating tasks to save time, meet tight schedules, as well as quality control the results.
- Analyzing data and doing complex calculations such as liquefaction evaluations, volume calculations, and settlement estimates efficiently and accurately so we can evaluate a variety of scenarios.
- Building a database that the client can use for their own analyses or for other projects
GIS Projects
Our GIS capabilities can probably best be described using several example projects. For many projects, GIS is a key component for managing data, integrating data, analyzing data, outputting report-ready graphics, and presenting results to the client:
